It brings great comfort. My mother, Mrs. Ching, knows. She left this world two Julys ago, too young, too soon. Never a moment passes when my heart does not miss her painfully, calling out for her. My dad, we her kids, and her convent girls were her whole life. She spoke of her “girls” by name years on, remembering their classroom antics, the giggles, the paper tiger mode she put on to mask her growing inner laughter, before it usually disintegrated in face of her girls’ vivacity and jokes. Every teacher’s day, I’d stand at the front gate of our flat, watching in great awe as she came home, almost buried under with flowers of all colours, single stalks, big bouquets, bags of little pens, pencils, erasers, homemade cards, drawings, hilarious audio cassette recordings of her students’ skits and greetings. There were even mothers of girls who stayed in touch through the years, whom she was so happy to be friends with. Oh she loved her girls. And that they loved her too brings some degree of comfort.
