Sleepy…

image

It’s such a nice rainy afternoon that even Twitter has gone to sleep…

I’ve always wondered why people always say kids nowadays are very difficult to teach, that they’re not the same as kids during our parents’ time, etc.  I thought about this many times but could not come to a conclusion as to what the cause might be – is it the type of programmes on TV now propagating wrong social values?  Is it due to things children read on the Internet?  Greater affluence in society?

I never found an answer but I’m just got an insight into current day parenting which I think may be a potential cause.

I was telling some friends that I didn’t want any children to do any colouring sort of activities during our Christmas gathering because I don’t want stains/marker/crayon lines on our walls.

Although  a friend of mine, who’s a mother, agreed to dispense with such activities, she commented that there’re washable markers/crayons nowadays.  I have to admit that the idea of using washable markers/crayons never crossed my mind.  Shouldn’t children be taught not to colour on walls, regardless whether the marker/crayon was permanent or not?  After all, if children are allowed to make a mess of the house with the expectancy that their parents will clean up, wouldn’t they grow up thinking they can always make a mess of things because their parents will clean up after them?  Surely this isn’t something we want to instil in the next generation?

Are we moddle coddling our children too much nowadays?  While we want to allow children to express their creativity freely, I think they also need to learn from young that some actions reap permanent consequences, and mommy and daddy can’t be around all the time to clean up!

I’m starting to understand why my cousin, who has been through Boy’s Home, Reformative Training Centre, and who is now in solitary confinement in prison can commit crimes repeatedly, but yet “expect” his mother to appeal for leniency from their Member of Parliament for his latest incarceration.

Seriously… spare the rotan, spoil the child.

Nokia X6 Video Demo

The above is a pretty good demonstration of the Nokia X6.  Enjoy!!

Nokia X6 Pre-Order

The Nokia X6 is now available for pre-order from all Nokia stores in Singapore.  I went down to the shop at Century Square and was told that to pre-order, you need to pay a deposit of $100, and the phone will be here before Christmas!  So exciting.  The advantage (as per the Nokia ad in the papers today) of pre-ordering is that you get a $30 Nokia store voucher (which according to the sales assistant at the Century Square store) that can be used to offset the price of the Nokia X6 – a whopping SGD1,038.  :P  A $50 esplanade mall voucher will also and some other freebie which I can’t recall at this point in time will also be given.

The pre-order will be open till 18 Dec.  I asked the Nokia guy why wasn’t Nokia letting the telcos launch the X6 as well, since the X3 is now on sale at Nokia and all telcos.  The guy said that the X6 is supposed to be Nokia’s “flagship” phone and meant to snatch market share from the iPhone (which I think is difficult since the Apple craze is really a personal preference thing).

Whatever the case, I don’t care.  I just want my X6.. and I’m glad it’s coming before Christmas.  Woohoo!

Bad Apple

Wah… why Apple keeps infringing other companies’ copyrights!

========================

Emblaze has notified Apple that the HTTP live streaming application intended for use its iPhone and iPod touch devices, infringes Emblaze’s US patent for media streaming technology.

Emblaze has been developing media streaming technology for more than a decade and first unveiled its technology to the public in a live video streaming broadcast from the White House during Easter, 1998.

The group’s live streaming technology allows users to send live or pre-recorded audio and video to other devices, it saves on data traffic, does not require devoted streaming servers and allows reliable streaming even through firewalls.

This technology will be used in the new innovative mobile device, which was unveiled last week in London by ELSE, a subsidiary of Emblaze.

Emblaze has offered to license Apple under Emblaze’s patented technology.

The notice requires Apple to respond by 15 December.

The Future of Nokia

Despite having always expounded the merits of Nokia, how it measures up or surpasses the iphone, and even typing this post on my 2-year old Nokia N82, I still have some reservations about its future.

My concern stems from the fact that Nokia still uses the Symbian OS and while it was all the rage in the not too distant past, it has lost much of its lustre to the iphone.

I’m very clear in what I want in my next handphone. It must have a decent camera, a good web browser, java enabled, video call capabilities and able to support apps I expect to use often such as MSN, Twitter, Facebook, blogging tools and so on.

I have a penchant for white phones so the white/blue Nokia X6 with its great features definitely meets my requirements. That said, I’m a tad worried about finding enough apps for it to keep me entertained for the next 1-2 years that I’m likely to be using the phone.

Although this small little part of me feels like buying the iphone as I foresee a future with no lack of applications, I think I’ll still buy the X6.. though I’m prepared that it may be the last Nokia i’m getting.. unless a Symbian revival happens, or Nokia moves to another more popular OS.

Passwords

I believe a person’s password can sometimes reveal what a person truly thinks of him/herself.  For example, years ago, I managed to guess this annoying girl’s password because I felt she always regarded herself as very angelic, though she’s far from that in reality.  True enough, her e-mail password was “angelXX”.

Recently, my colleague Fillet went on a 1 week leave.  She passed me her user id and password just in case anyone needed to access her computer.  I nearly burst out laughing when I saw her password.  It was “princessXXX”.  I was very amused and I must say it’s quite true – she has a pretty deluded view about her appearance & height.

In case you’re wondering what sort of passwords I use, well, it’s usually associated with places, e.g. “bedokXX” or something like that.  I believe that’s ‘cos I’m a pretty practical person who has no delusions about myself.  Heh.

Chi Ming Yuan Chun Lor Mee

Went to Amoy Street Food Centre for the first time today.  Quite a far walk from my office… about 10 minutes.  Good thing about the place is that food is cheap.  Kopi-C costs $1 (it usually costs about $1.10 at Coffee & Toast and the various eateries at Intl Plaza), sugarcane costs about $1.30 (with lemon) and lor mee costs $2/$3.

This is a pic of my first meal at Amoy Street Food Centre.  Sigh… welcome to the heartlands…

Samsung’s Diva Phones

Samsung’s launching a series of phones call the “Diva” series… the first 2 models unveiled are full of bling.  When I first read the description of how “girly” they are, I thought some of those chio Japanese/Korean phones finally made their way here… alas… I don’t think they’re very chio at all.
