Innovative Christmas Gift

I’ve been cracking my head over what to buy for some close friends for Christmas.  I originally wanted to give them some stuff from Bath and Bodyworks but unfortunately, the shipment will only come in Jan 2009.  Azure, probably sensing my dilemma, sent me the following email.

==================

My dear friends,

Somewhat embarrassing to admit, Christmas is tight this year.
I will be making bedroom slippers for you all as gifts. Please let me know your sizes. You’ll most likely agree that it’s a splendid idea, and should you wish to do the same, I’ve included the instructions below.

How to make bedroom slippers out of maxi pads:
– You need four maxi pads to make a pair.
– Two of them get laid out flat, for the foot part.
– The other two wrap around the toe area to form the top.
– Tape or glue each side of the top pieces to the bottom of the foot part.

Decorate the tops with whatever you desire, silk flowers (this is most aesthetically appealing), etc.
These slippers are:
– Soft and Hygienic
– Non-slip grip strips on the soles
– Built in deodorant feature keeps feet smelling fresh
– No more bending over to mop up spills
– Disposable and biodegradable
– Environmentally safe
– Three convenient sizes: (1.) Regular, (2.) Light and (3.) Get out the Sand Bags.

I’ve attached a photo of the first pair I made so that you can see the nifty slippers for yourself….

Awaiting your response. It’s crucial that I get the right size for each one of you.

Snooze is Evil

I need to stop snoozing.  Woke up at 8:15am this morning though my original alarm clock was set for 7:30am.  Woke up at 7:40am (snooze), Iceman rang at 7:45am, 2nd alarm went off again at 7:50am and every subsequent 5 minutes till 8:15am.  Argh.  Left my house at 8:42am (I officially start work at 8:30am) and reached office at 9:25am!!  Sigh.  Very bad.

Wishing Spears

There’re some people in my office with really bad English.  We all know of Kid’s Meal’s infamous "quitted"… and then there’s Smarties’ way of pronouncing "claim" – "craim".  I heard a new one today.  The Esplanade’s "wishing spheres" for the new year have been renamed the "wishing spears".

Reminds me of an ex-colleague at an ISP helpdesk I used to work at.  He used to get his "r" and "l" sounds mixed up.  So if his name is "Clive", he would introduce himself as "Crive", for example.  I remember there was once when I was still new to the helpdesk… and so I sat in as he answered calls as part of my training.  One of the calls was from this lady who couldn’t connect to the Internet or something and this was what he said to her:

"ISP Helpdesk, this is Crive speaking.  To troubleshoot, can you please open your blouser".

I wonder if the lady was offended…

Google Mail

Oh dear… I have 527 pages of 50 emails per page in my gmail account.  I am so screwed.  It’s grown to the extent that it’s hard to keep track of emails that come in… I recall a time when I used to be fastidious about clearing my emails… then as I started work and gmail started giving this practically unlimited account, my mails just started piling up.

I always thought I would get down to clearing the emails… but… heh.  I realised it’s just impossible.  So what I did today was to archive all the 26,350 emails in my inbox and start from scratch.  MAYBE one day I’ll get down to clearing the 26,350 emails.  Who knows… boredom can be inspiring.

Love (Songs) Actually

Another songs for the wedding… heh… stolen from Love Actually.

Lynden David Hall – All You Need Is Love

La Vie En Rose

Watched a bit of Wall E (didn’t finish the movie ‘cos I was too zzz) on Sunday and heard this song, La Vie En Rose (translated to mean life in rose/pink, i.e. a rosy view of life).  I think it’s a lovely song.  I’m very familiar with the tune but never knew the title.  Anyway, I’m thinking that this might me a potential wedding march in song?  Iceman didn’t manage to load the youtube vid but I thought we could cut out the first 1:08min of the song… hmm…

The tune’s so romantic yet catchy.  Heh.

Mongkok Caustic Attack

Booze Queen… better not hang out in Mongkok next time you go to HK…

46 hurt in HK acid attack

HONG KONG – POLICE here were investigating yesterday after dozens of Christmas shoppers were burned by bottles of acid hurled from a high-rise building onto one of the city’s busiest streets, a report said.

Police said 46 people were injured in a deliberate attack as two large plastic bottles of caustic liquid crashed to the ground in the teeming Mong Kok district at about 5pm on Saturday, said the Sunday Morning Post.

Witnesses said the victims, mostly youngsters, screamed out and rushed to find water to wash off the liquid, which burned holes in their clothes and damaged their skin. Some men simply stripped.

‘A bottle came down,’ one man told the paper. ‘It looked like an ordinary bottle of water, and the crowd began to disperse. Then I saw people with red faces and eyes in pain.’

The victims, including 26 women and girls, were scalded in their limbs, eyes, face or body, according to the Chinese-language Wen Wei Po. All the victims had been released from hospital by the end of Saturday, the report said.

Police said they searched the building from which the 750ml bottles appeared to have been thrown, but had not arrested any suspects.

Police superintendent Annie Fonda told the newspaper: ‘Judging by the traces and the positions of the two bottles, this is not an accident. We believe someone intentionally hurled them from a height.’

The liquid has been sent to a laboratory, and the police have not yet determined what it is, said police spokesman Leona Leung.

Witnesses suspect the liquid is acid drain cleaner, one of the most hazardous household products available to the public.

The thrower, if convicted of attempting harm on the lives of others, could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, Supt Fonda said.

Mong Kok has often been a site of random attacks, the other famous case being the brick-throwing incident four years ago, the Wen Wei Po pointed out. The brick thrower was sentenced to 21/2 years in jail, it added.

Kiss of Deaf

I’m not gloating over the lady’s misfortune but the thought that kissing can lead to loss of hearing tickles me.

====================================

Woman turns deaf after kiss

SHANGHAI – A PASSIONATE kiss ruptured a young woman’s eardrum in southern China, state media reported on Monday, in what has been dubbed the ‘kiss of deaf’.

The 20-something girl from Zhuhai city in Guangdong province was treated by hospital doctors after completely losing the hearing in her left ear, the China Daily reported, citing the Guangzhou Daily.

‘The kiss reduced the pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and caused the breakdown of the ear,’ the treating doctor, surnamed Li, was quoted as saying, adding the woman’s hearing would likely recover in about two months.

The incident prompted newspapers to dispense kissing safety advice.

While kissing is normally very safe, doctors urge people to proceed with caution, the China Daily reported.

‘A strong kiss may cause an imbalance in air pressure between the two inner ears and lead to a broken ear drum,’ said the English-language Shanghai Daily in a story headlined ‘Kiss of deaf’. – AFP
