My Favourite Nokia Apps

This is a little overdue but better late than never!  My Favourite Symbian Applications (so far and in no particular order):

Wordmobi

This is a WordPress blogging software for S60v5 phones.  It also allows you to insert pictures and links in your blog posts.  You can also choose to publish or save your post.  Visit http://code.google.com/p/wordmobi/ to download.

Threadsms

It puzzles me why Nokia, which had a “chat style” sms application for S60v3 phones in its Betalab, did not roll out this function for all their handphones.  This is after all one of the most common and most popular functions of many many other handphone manufacturers (HTC, Sony Ericsson, Apple).

After hunting around a little, I found a nifty application for S60v5 phones called Threadsms.  Visit http://ehandysoft.com/threadsms.htm to download.  Please note that the app costs about S$20.  I’m running the free trial version currently, and it’s sufficient for my needs, though the smses I send using the app has “Threadsms” appended at the end of the message.

Bible Software by Olivetree

I’ve not decided if I want to pay close to S$20 for a NIV bible.  I’m currently using the free KJV bible from Olivetree.  You can download this here: http://store.ovi.com/content/21223.

Gravity

This is the best twitter mobile client I’ve found so far.  It supports multiple twitter / statusnet accounts and you can upload pictures very very easily with it.  Twibble also supports the uploading of pictures, though it isn’t very stable – my pictures wouldn’t load 50% of the time.  To get Gravity, click here: http://store.ovi.com/content/6855.  The trial only lasts 10 days unfortunately.  Snaptu is also a great twitter app (among other functions) but does not support the uploading of pictures.  That said, I suppose one could always e-mail the photo to twitpic in order to upload it…

Windows Live Messenger

YES!  The official Windows chat messenger is available for Nokia’s S60v5 phones!  Hooray for it!  It works pretty much the same as the desktop MSN, supporting offline messaging, profile pictures, etc.  Get this fantastic app here: http://store.ovi.com/content/16229.

Straits Times

This came installed in my X6 but you can find it in the Ovi store too.  Get your daily news fix: http://store.ovi.com/content/4556.

Nokia Photo Browser

Another great app from Nokia Betalabs, this photo browser makes viewing of your images very easy and you can zoom in simply by “pressing” your finger against the spot you want to zoom in on (I’m talking about touch screen phones ya?).  Get this fun app here: http://store.ovi.com/content/3612.

Facebook

Check your Facebook status updates, inbox messages, etc, at your convenience.  The X6 came pre-loaded with this app but you can find it at the Ovi store too: http://store.ovi.com/content/6B505CF11830BD92E040050A85326355.

Golden Village

This app allows you to check movie listings from GV.  My app came pre-loaded with the X6 and I couldn’t find it at the Ovi store.  I did a search online and it can be found here (I think): http://www.innosofts.com/igv/nokia/.  Please scan for viruses before downloading!

There you have it.  Who said Nokia phones don’t come with cool apps?

    Hi uptowngal,

Just to check with you: Have you encountered any performance issues with the X6 e.g. during video playback, playing games, sending SMS? I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of it but have hesitated getting it as the processor is still the ARM 11 434 MHz processor and only has 128MB RAM. Not sure if it will have any negative impact on its performance. Don’t want to spend and regret. Thanks in advanvce for your comments and advice. 🙂

My phone did hang twice when I was accessing http://www.channel5.com.sg, though I think it’s ‘cos the site is too data intensive and I tried to click the “Programme Schedule” link before the page was fully loaded.

I also had a faulty headset initially but I managed to do a swop at Nokia and the 2nd one has been working fine so far (used it over 2 days).

I took a few video recordings of my bunnies, so far no problem during playback. Am pleased with the camera ‘cos it’s quite sharp – but the autofocus light uses the 2 LEDs and it’s REALLY FREAKING BRIGHT. My bunnies hate it ‘cos of the glare. (This is more in relation to taking photos rather than taking videos.)

Processor speed wise, I noted that if I’m running the Threadsms app, it takes momentarily longer to open other applications. Else, it’s ok I guess, though I’m told that the iPhone launches apps faster (according to Azure and my boss). The ST application also takes quite long to launch but I didn’t time it.

I play mainly 2 games on the X6 – Raving Rabbids & Breaking Bricks. Both take quite long to launch (abt 15sec) but I don’t know if that’s due to the game being huge or the phone. (Raving Rabbids has many mini games in it). Maybe it’s both.

I feel that the X6 has met all my needs and the batt life is pretty decent (I listened to MP3s for about 40min today, logged into twitter about 12 times, checked facebook twice, checked e-mail once for about 3min, read ST for about 10min, sent about 20smses, used the phone for 2 very short calls and there’s about 2 bars left on my batt.

I do wished the X6 worked faster (it’s slower than my N82). If anything, the speed feels like my husb’s HTC Touch Cruise 09 but I take it that I need to learn to be patient.

This website, http://www.tech-news-daily.info/review-nokia-x6.html, gives a pretty accurate user review of the X6 except that there IS a shortcut on the homescreen to get to the Calendar. Juz press the middle top portion of the phone (juz below the “Nokia” logo) and you have the option to “Open Calendar” or select a Profile. Tapping the top right corner of the phone opens the Connectivity menu and shows any active connections (e.g. if th bluetooth/WLAN is on), as well as any active alarms. Tapping on the clock opens the Clock Menu. I didn’t know about this till I read the manual.

This is a great phone but if you’re very impatient and want a really fast phone, maybe you might want to consider waiting for the Nexus One by google? The snapdragon processor seems promising…

  4. 4 Iceman

Yes!!! The snapdragon processor is also on the HTC HD2!!!

Nexus One is out. 🙂 But shipping to Singapore and paying for GST is crappy.

Haha.. yeah, I know it’s out… out 2am last night right? Hahahaha. My friend can’t wait to get it. He sms’d me about it before 8am this morning. Pengz…

The phone looks a little too masculine and too similar to the other HTC phones for me…

So glad you’re enjoying Olive Tree on your Symbian 60-5 phone.

  8. 8 UptownGal

    Hi Sarah!

Thanks for dropping by. Will Olive Tree be releasing more products for the S60v5 soon?

    Hi uptowngal,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. 🙂 Final question. Do you think it was worth paying the pre-order price for the phone?

  11. 11 UptownGal

If I were to put aside my personal preference & desperation for a new hp, I think the X6 is only worth S$800 w/o contract. I paid S$1009… the extra 200… was the price I paid for liking Nokia phones (over SE, Samsung & LG) and for desperately wanting a new hp. Heh.
