H1N1 FLU OUTBREAK

Flu scare for NTU student

Undergrad returning from Mexico was admitted to CDC with running nose but tests show he’s clear

By Teh Joo Lin , Carolyn Quek , Lee Hui Chieh

AN UNDERGRADUATE who returned to Singapore last Friday from an exchange programme in Mexico caused a scare on Sunday, when he woke up with a running nose and was admitted to the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC).

The fear of a first infected patient here turned out to be a false alarm when laboratory tests showed that Mr Melvin Yang, 25, had not been infected by any Influenza A virus.

Mr Yang, who had been on self-imposed home quarantine, was not anxious because he thought that his running nose was probably due to his body adjusting back to the environment here.

But the third-year business student from the Nanyang Technological University decided to play it safe and call 993 for the special ambulance service to ferry him to the CDC, where he got his throat swabbed and blood sample taken.

‘I decided to do so as a precaution. I couldn’t just think that I was all right,’ he said.

He was kept overnight for observation in an isolation ward in the CDC, and said he should be discharged on Monday. ‘I’ve been told not to worry,’ he told The Straits Times from his room last night.

He is among three Singaporeans and two foreigners, who travelled here from Mexico in the last seven days, whom government officers have been monitoring over the phone.

One of the other Singaporeans has remained disease-free for seven days after returning home, and is now in the clear.

The other three people are also well, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

Nobody in Singapore has been found to have contracted the new Influenza A (H1N1) strain so far. Two more people who were unwell and had recent travel history were screened for the virus on Sunday, bringing the total number of such cases to 27.

Frankly, if I woke up and found my nose RUNNING, I would be damn scared too…

DIY Nail Art

Charmed by the Swarovski crystals on my nails last week, I decided to try applying them on my nails myself.  Saw how the manicurist did it last week and so I adapted…

P1020358

Steps:

1. Use base coat.

2. Use 2 coats of nail colour.

3. Apply 2 coats of white/gold glitter on the tips of nails (simulating a French manicure).

4. Drop a small glob of base coat onto a piece of paper.

5. Dip the sharp point of that metal tool in the pic above (er… not sure what it’s called but it’s meant for squeezing black heads) into the drop of base coat, then use it to pick up the crystal by tapping on the top of the crystal.

6. Still “holding” the crystal, dip the bottom of the crystal into the base coat, thus substituting nail glue.

7. Stick the crystal onto nail.

8. Apply 2 coats of quick dry top coat.

Voila!  (Btw, there’re many different sizes & colours of crystals that can be bought from Mix & Match at People’s Park Centre.  Really cheap too!)

Indoor Shoot Album

As usual… for those on my MSN contact list…

In conclusion:

1. I conclude that if a person’s style is slanted towards the “Taiwanese” cheena way, it’s next to impossible to change it…

2. I’m overall happy with the hairdos of the indoor shoot… though they’re leaning towards the cheena side, I’m glad the 4 looks are vastly different.

3. Seems like when I did a survey of the looks… most didn’t notice the white ribbon… they were focused elsewhere… hahahaha.  That’s a huge consolation.  HAHAHAHA.

Indoor Photoshoot

Didn’t get to do the outdoor shoot today because of the rain.  *Sniff*.  Will be going for the outdoor shoot next Tue… and will need to top up $100.  Anyway, the MUA from French Bridal, Jinyan, does makeup very well… but… her way of doing hairdos… aiyoh… damn cheena.  Whatever you see here… trust me… I already got her to tone down as much as possible… I nearly ended up with feathers in my hair!

P1020313

Affable Muah Chee & Patience came along for the photoshoot.

The front looked ok… the right side looked ok but the left side… arghhhh!!!!  I can’t stand the ribbon!

P1020324 P1020319

This was really really cheena… but since it’s matched with a cheongsam.. ok lah.. just go along with the look.

*Pretends I’m in ‘In the Mood for Love’…

Iceman getting ready.  Looks good ya?  Confirm not cheena… hahaha.

 P1020332 P1020334 P1020336

Front and back of the additional gown I chose yesterday for the shoot.  Can see the pins at the back holding up my dress?  Hahaha.  Ok… this “curry pok” hairdo really doesn’t suit me… but this modernised beehive look is so popular nowadays, I just had to try lah.  The MUA wanted to put some huge fake diamond accessory on my hair but I refused… ended up using this tiny tiara borrowed from Booze Queen as a clip on the side of my head… right side… but not viewable from the photos I took above.  😛

Discussed with the MUA.  For the outdoor shoot, I’ll do the same back as the curry pok hair… but the front will be combed to the side… no more curry pok… Hahahaha.

Forgot to take photos of Iceman and me in the traditional pao and kua… will have to wait till the photos are ready… I can’t really remember what my hair looked like… think it was some braids on the sides, tied back in a bun and some entrails down the side… oh and of course… a red ruby accessory on the side too.  CHEENA!!!!!

Eve of Photoshoot

Did my nails today at Booze Queen’s usual manicure place, Fave Nails.  Am pretty satisfied with them.  Did nail art for fingers and a traditional French pedicure for my feet.

Also went to French Bridal to do the final fitting for my evening gown.  Do you think I should get more beading / lace sewn on it?

270420091087 270420091090

Oops… just realised the photos are a little blur.  My hands were trembling when I was taking the photos.  Paiseh.

And my happiest haul of the day was to find this gown for the photoshoot!  This will replace the gold cheongsam and the navy blue tube. Heh.  The green’s brighter in real life and I’m happy that it doesn’t have a “pong pong” skirt” and it’s a nice light mint green.  😀

Sigh… if only I could get someone to tag long to help take photos.  *Sniff*.

28 Apr Weather

That’s the NEA weather forecast for the next 3 days.  I really really pray that the afternoon will be cool ‘cos of the morning rain and not too sunny so we can open our eyes when we take photos!

Photoshoot Gown Album

Here’s for people on my MSN contact list… a close up of all gowns.

*Dilemma*

Photoshoot Gown Dilemma

Just went to select gowns for the photoshoot.  I’ll have 5 outfits in total – actual day white gown, actual day evening gown, actual day kwa, photoshoot evening gown and photoshoot outdoor gown.  Here’s a sneak peek:

Front & back of actual day white gown.

P1020309

Kwa – not much choice here… there were 2 kwas in small size and this one fit better… I preferred it too ‘cos I liked the silver beading rather than the white beading of the other one.  Heh.

Now comes the dilemma… I liked the colour of this turquoise gown (it’s a little more bluish than what it seems in the photo) but I really can’t stand the huge ruffle in front.

 P1020303 P1020304

Then I tried this gold cheongsam which I really liked and I think will go well in the photoshoot since I already have something in white, red and bluish purple.

 P1020305 P1020306

That said, if I choose this cheongsam… it’ll mean I have 2 cheongsams for the photoshoot?  Like a bit boring right?

The lady at French Bridal then showed me this tube gown which I like too (the design’s actually almost the same as the gold cheongsam)… but… if I choose this dark navy blue (it’s almost black if you see it in person), won’t it be very boring ‘cos my other evening gown’s also dark?  (The back view is the more accurate shade of navy blue).

 P1020307 P1020308

Sigh.  How?  I’ve reserved both the gold cheongsam and the navy blue tube but I can only pick 1 for the photoshoot.  I have less than 48hrs to decide… help!!

Oh… and in the midst of my browsing, I found this purple cheongsam which I thought is really sweet.

P1020301 P1020302

Thinking of renting it for the JB dinner.  The side panel’s made of translucent lace… hence erm, I wasn’t posing with my arm… I was covering my dark undies… hahahahaha.

Let’s recap the colour scheme here…

This?

Or this?

P1020296P1020300P1020307180420091005P1020309

Or maybe I should just give them a ring and use the purple cheongsam?

How how how?

I’m decided

I’ve decided not to use the French Bridal MUA for day 1 of the wedding.  In my obsession with my makeup and new blog feature, I forgot to mention that the French Bridal MUA said something that I was not too happy about.  While doing the slipshod trial makeup for me, she casually mentioned that some customers are very demanding and it’s not good ‘cos if the MUA is not in a good mood, she will not be able to do a good job for the customer.  I was like WTF?  Is that some veiled threat or something?  Although her tone wasn’t threatening, I nonetheless felt that that was not an appropriate thing to say.

On top of that, she looks super dowdy lor… lousy dressing, rough skin, dry frizzy hair with no makeup except for nicely drawn brows.  Doesn’t inspire much confidence.  I didn’t want to be biased because an ugly person with bad dress sense might still be able to do a good job but having said what she said about how MUAs might not be able to do a good job if they’re not in a good mood, I think that’s the last straw.  So even if her makeup skills on Tue turn out better than my usual hair stylist, I’ve decided that I will still not use her.  Bleah.

——————————————-

Forgot to add… another thing that I’m really happy about Yuki (my hairstylist) is… the makeup brands she uses!  E.g. Majolica mascara (I told her about the new Expander Eye Frame and she’s getting her niece to buy from Taiwan immediately.. haha) and lip gloss, Shu Uemura eyeshadow palette, etc.  😀

If anyone else wants to hire her for makeup/hair, drop me a note.  Her usual charge for makeup and hair (in Singapore) is $400.  $50 extra if you need her to be at your place before 7am.  She’s also a hairstylst and works out of the Prettybox studio at Tg Pagar.
